Abstract

This research project aims to analyze the financialization process of globalized agribusiness in Brazil and how it has been changing the forms of corporate organization and the use of the territory by firms in the activity. In the last two decades, several firms linked to the agribusiness have been adopting different financialization strategies aiming to raise financial funds, especially in the capital market, to finance the cost of operations and investments in the business expansion. This process has substantially increased the indebtedness levels of large firms in the activity, resulting in exacerbated financial leverage and operational risks. In contrast, the greater influence of financial agents and processes in the productive and commercial dynamics of these firms imposes new forms of corporate governance, setting actions that reduce costs and amplify the profits to maximize the remuneration of shareholders. It leads in competitive logics of location, renewed operational organizations, and new strategies of use of the territory by agribusiness firms. Therefore, this research aims to understand the financialization of the contemporary neoliberal capitalist economy and how this phenomenon has impacted the globalized agribusiness. The main topics of investigation include the mechanisms of financialization recently adopted by agents of the agribusiness, the importance of the capital market and the forms of corporate and geographic organization of some financialized firms.
