Abstract

This project is part of a larger research on the global history of compulsory labor mobilized for coffee production between the mid-sixteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its general objective is to compose a book with the final synthesis of its results. Among the immediate and specific objectives of this application submitted to FAPESP, I intend, firstly, to fill the gaps in the bibliography on Dutch and English colonialism in Asia during the nineteenth century, notably those related to the Cultivation System in Java (nowadays Indonesia) and, to a lesser extent, the Kangany System in Ceylon (Sri Lanka); second, to fill the gaps in the literature concerning the role of European trading companies in Asia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (the Dutch VOC, the English EIC, and the French CIO); third, to fill the gaps concerning Dutch colonialism in the West Indies, especially in Suriname; and finally, to establish direct conversations with historians and scholars working at the Institute for History at Leiden University, The Netherlands, who are renowned specialists in these respective fields.
