Abstract

Quantum resource theories constitute one of the most general, and yet successful, frameworks to study a wide variety of quantum phenomena, ranging from entanglement to thermodynamics. Recently, it has even been applied to obtain protocols concerning consumption of non-Markovianity and temporal resolution to reduce noise in quantum devices. However, in this context of multitime quantum dynamics, quantum resource theories have not yet been employed to analyze the relation between non-Markovianity and thermodynamics of general quantum processes. In this project, we seek to develop a resource theory for multitime thermodynamic quantum processes. This can be done by restricting the free operations of a resource theory of quantum processes to those that can be simulated by possibly correlated thermal operations on the system, both before and after each time step of the dynamics. From a practical perspective, many useful results could be obtained from this resource-theoretical approach, like protocols that enhance work extraction while consuming non-Markovianity as a resource. Such a theory could also provide a deeper understanding of fundamental aspects of quantum theory, like the emergence of thermodynamic behavior in the Markovian limit and the relation between information and thermodynamics on the quantum level.
