Abstract

Ischemic Stroke (IS) is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the primary cause of disability in adults. Given the wide range of possible outcomes for patients, ranging from complete recovery to death, and the various therapeutic approaches available, there is a need for prognostic factors that can quickly and accurately predict the clinical outcomes of these patients. It is in this context that the potential benefits of identifying biomarkers involved in the different pathophysiological processes of IS, such as Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), emerge. NSE is a protein found in the cytoplasm of neurons and plays a role in energy metabolism. Currently, it is used as a prognostic marker in patients with hypoxic encephalopathy. However, its relationship with IS, including in-hospital mortality, severity of clinical manifestations, and short- and long-term prognosis, has not yet been established. The main objective of the present study is to analyze the accuracy of NSE in predicting the mortality of patients admitted with IS. Plasma samples of NSE will be collected from patients over 18 years of age who are admitted to a tertiary hospital within 4.5 hours of stroke onset, regardless of whether they undergo thrombolysis or not. These samples will be correlated with the clinical outcomes of the patients.
