Abstract

In this research, we will use the studies about the postcolonial literatures of female authorship in french language, specifically those from Algeria, to observe the construction of the multiple identities of the female characters in the Leïla Sebbar's collection of novels La jeune fille au balcon (1996), in comparison with Assia Djebar's novel Vaste est la prison (1995). Our goal is to use the comparative literary analysis about the marginalization of the woman in the Algerian context to build a panorama of the female characters pictured by the authors, taking into account the formative aspects of their identity and the context in which they are inserted. More precisely, we seek to explore the literary representation of Algerian women in order to remove the colonial masks and the pre-judgments implanted by the imaginary of what is the orient with the aim of contributing to identity and gender studies conducted so far on literature from the Maghreb.
