Abstract

The scarcity of studies on the dynamics of carbon flux in continental waters still causes great uncertainties regarding the contribution of these environments to the global carbon cycle. This scarcity is due to the difficulty of collecting and systematically monitoring water bodies due to the operational cost of field trips and analyses. In this sense, alternatives must be sought to facilitate and increase carbon data's spatial and temporal coverage in inland waters. Previous studies have indicated the application of remote sensing methods to estimate the colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM - Colored Dissolved Organic Matter) and use it as a proxy for the concentration of DOC (Dissolved Organic Carbon). Globally, these studies are more advanced, but studies to overcome this knowledge gap in Brazil are still limited. Therefore, remote sensing emerges as a powerful tool for quantifying and mapping the content of CDOM and DOC and may contribute to understanding the dynamics of processing, emission, and carbon storage in these environments. Considering this context, the main objective of this master's project is to develop a DOC estimation model based on remote sensing images, using CDOM absorption as a "proxy" for the Ibitinga and Promissão reservoirs, located in the cascade of Tietê reservoirs and for the Billings Dam. The MSI/Sentinel-2 and OLI/Landsat-8/9 sensors, which have radiometric, spatial, spectral, and temporal qualities favorable for estimating absorption by colored organic matter (aCDOM), will be evaluated. At the end of this research, it is expected to obtain a model for the systematic mapping of CDOM/DOC for the three aquatic systems mentioned above. The developed model will be inserted into the MAPAQUALI platform being developed by the Aquatic Systems Instrumentation Laboratory (LabISA) team (FAPESP Project 2020/14613-8).
