Abstract

The presence of emerging contaminants in aquatic systems is a reality due to their intense and uninterrupted use, and the difficulty of removing them in conventional sewage treatment systems. Thus, the development of new efficient technologies for the elimination of these compounds is an urgent need, with adsorption being an advantageous technique over others. This project addresses the synthesis of a new metalorganic framework (MOF) containing niobium, its immobilization in membranes based on chitosan, polylactic acid and polyurethane prepared by a new technique, rotospinning. These new membranes will be used in the adsorption of emerging contaminants from water such as bisphenol A, perfluorooctanoic acid and chloroquine, whose presence in environmental matrices has aroused worldwide concern. As far as is known, there are no reports in the literature on the preparation of MOF with niobium or on the immobilization of adsorbents in membranes prepared by rotational spinning, especially with the biopolymer chitosan. In addition, the vast majority of MOF-based adsorbents are in powder form, and the immobilization of the new MOF on the membranes brings numerous advantages to the process as the filtration step is not necessary. In this project, it is planned to optimize the process and adsorption of pollutants to polymeric membranes containing MOF, as well as to study the kinetics and isotherms and calculate the thermodynamic parameters of adsorptive systems. In addition, the objective is to evaluate several membrane reuse cycles and also the adsorption in multicomponent systems. Experiments to evaluate the water purification in continuous flow will be carried out. Molecular and adsorbent/adsorbate interactions modeling will be carried out. Additionally, the toxicities of MOF, adsorbent membranes and real effluents before and after treatment will be evaluated through tests with pre-established organisms, which will act as bioindicators.
