Abstract

The regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism is associated with tolerance to water deficit and low temperatures. The main environmental limitations for sugarcane production, whose sensitivity to these limitations is greater compared to energy cane. Herein, we propose that the adjustments in C and N metabolism are crucial for energy cane tolerance to water deficit and low temperatures. In addition to the little knowledge of the metabolism of energy cane, the dynamics of C and N metabolism under limiting conditions is little known in vegetatively propagated C4 plants, such as species of the genus Saccharum. This project aims to compare the metabolic, physiological and morphological responses of sugarcane and energy cane cultivars under isolated and combined stress conditions of water deficit and low temperature, evaluating how the production, transport and allocation of assimilates and nitrogen metabolism are altered. For this purpose, the distribution of assimilates labeled with 13C will be monitored, and the remobilization of nitrogen through the use of 15N, together with the variation of the levels of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds in the plant, evaluating the osmotic and photosynthetic adjustments during stress and recovery. The results obtained will contribute to the elucidation of the physiological strategies of energy cane that lead to better plant performance under limiting conditions compared to sugarcane. (AU)
