Abstract

This scientific initiation (CI) project aims to conduct a survey of Andean American art and archaeology collections located and preserved in collections in São Paulo. The art objects produced by indigenous peoples before the Spanish invasion carry a lot of information about their cosmology and rituals (ARCURI, 2010), their means of producing and using the natural pigments made from fauna and flora species (SIRACUSANO, 2005), their iconography and their meanings (GISBERT, 2008, 2001; GOLTE, 2009; VILLALVA, 2016). It is worth mentioning that these objects are important for the study of religious architectures during the colonial period, belonging to the so-called "Hybrid Andean Baroque" (BAILEY, 2010). From this time, the arts gain new configurations and functions within the society of the Viceroyalty of Peru, also as a means to catechize the indigenous people and eliminate their rites and beliefs (GISBERT, 2008), but in many cases do not lose their codes of meanings (CUMMINGS, 2002). With this, the objects carry in themselves the historical and social changes that occurred with the invasion of the Andean countries, as well as the re-significations of original cultural elements. Therefore, this CI seeks to contribute directly to the Young Researcher Project phase 2 funded by FAPESP at FAU-USP, entitled "Barroco-Açu. Portuguese America in the Artistic Geography of the Global South" by gathering information about the Andean art and archeology collections and objects located in São Paulo, highlighting their potentiality within academic research. In addition, the research also seeks to give continuity to the surveys and analyses started in the Scientific Initiation entitled "On Hybrid Andean Baroque: the main studies on the decoration of façades of religious architecture in the Andes between the 17th and 18th centuries" (2022/08904-5).
