Abstract

The presence of contaminants from industrial and hospital waste and human consumption in the environment is a matter of global concern due to the effects that these contaminants can cause to the environment and human health. In addition, another global concern is the need to generate clean energy to preserve the environment. In this scenario, (photo)electrocatalytic processes have demonstrated good efficiency for the oxidation of organic contaminants or for the reduction of H2O and N2 to H2 and NH3, respectively. The project that will be developed aims at the application of (photo)electrocatalysis using a bifunctional electrode in a reactor for the oxidation of organic contaminants concomitant with the reduction of H2O for energy generation, evaluating different contaminants present in biomass, as well as different modified bifunctional electrodes . Different degradation parameters of contaminants will be evaluated, such as pH of the medium and time of application of the process. Chromatographic methods will be developed and validated to quantify oxidized contaminants, identify degradation intermediates and quantify products generated during reduction, assessing the need for coupling (photo)electrocatalysis with another process, such as photo-electro-Fenton, for oxidation of contaminants. It is expected to expand the study for the application of the (photo)electrocatalytic process in industrial effluents in the region of São Carlos - SP, Brazil, aiming at the use of biomass that would be discarded in the form of contaminants of the environment by industries for energy generation
