Abstract

This project aims at analyzing the influence of Hegel's dialectic on Marcuse's concept of immanent critique in Eros and Civilization (1955). In Reason and Revolution (1941) and A Note on Dialectics (1960), dialectics denies facticity and sets it in relation to its determinate negations. This process is meant to show its own destructiveness and the real possibilities denied by instituted reality. This research aims at unfolding my analysis of the model of immanent criticism reconstructed in my master's research (FAPESP nº 2021/14480-0, 02/22 to 03/23). More specifically, I will investigate how Marcuse's reading of Freud's thought in Eros and Civilization is based on a dialectic framework developed in Reason and Revolution. The main hypothesis of the project is that the critique of the performance principle is dialectical. This principle is at the center of the author's effort to diagnose the crisis tendencies of late capitalist societies and the possibility of overcoming them. A reading of Eros and Civilization based on the readings of Reason and Revolution and A Note on Dialectic will be undertaken to test this hypothesis. (AU)
