Abstract

The production of sugarcane plays an essential role in Brazil's economy, being a fundamental source for obtaining sugar, ethanol, and other derived products. However, this agricultural activity is subject to significant impacts caused by climatic phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña. These climate variations have important effects on the global climate, affecting rainfall patterns, temperature, and wind in different regions of the world, which can have direct consequences on sugarcane production. To prevent and minimize the impacts of El Niño and La Niña on sugarcane production, it is important to understand how these phenomena affect agriculture. An effective way to achieve this is through simulations that take into account the crops affected by these events, using process-based models. This approach provides the ability to anticipate and adapt to climate variations, contributing to the resilience of producers and the maintenance of agricultural productivity in the face of increasingly frequent climate challenges. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the effect of El Niño Southern Oscillation phases on the quality and productivity of sugarcane in different sugarcane-producing regions of Brazil, for different production periods, based on simulations from the DSSAT/SAMUCA model.
