Abstract

The present proposal is part of the doctoral research project Changes on the Bottom Limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation on the Last Decades [FAPESP 2021/09317-3]. It will be carried out in the Alfred Wegner Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany, under the supervision of Dr. Ralph Timmermann. We propose the usage of the Finite Element Sea Ice-Ocean Model (FESOM) to improve the modeling of the AABW, seeking to understand the mechanisms involved in the recent alterations in this water mass, and how these modulations affect the circulation on the western South Atlantic. This approach is crucial as relying solely on in situ data, global oceanic models outputs, and reanalysis has proven insufficient for conducting a comprehensive study of AABW variations and its causes.
