Abstract

The French presence in Brazil during the nineteenth century is undeniable, especially considering the performance of the recognized French Artistic Colony in the country, and its founding role in the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro from 1816. This research project abroad, aligned with the regular scholarship project, aims to deepen knowledge about the Franco-Brazilian intellectual exchanges to the context of the nineteenth century regarding the teaching and the history of architecture in Brazil. The objective of this proposal is to understand, above all, the links between the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (Rio de Janeiro) and the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. The French institution established itself as a reference to the Brazilian Academy since its initial project, as a letter written by its articulator, Joachim Lebreton (1816), to the Conde da Barca, then Minister and Secretary of State for Government Business. In addition, it also aims to gather documents from French libraries and archives, in particular from the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Institut de France, on intellectuals linked to the French Artistic Colony, the teaching at the parisian Académie Royale de Beaux-Arts, and manuscripts on the history of architecture. These objectives are in line with the research carried out in Brazil, and the bibliographic aggiornamento in France has been shown to be a fundamental stage, as the research progresses, to overcome obstacles found so far, and the difficulty in obtaining sources in Brazilian archives and libraries.
