Abstract

This research aims to collect and analyze references to climatic phenomena, disease and famine in written sources from the Sahel region. For this research, narratives written by scholars linked to the madrasas built in Mali during the heyday of the old Mandinka social formation (11th-15th centuries) and the old Songai social formation (15th-16th centuries) will be used. The analysis will focus above all on the Afro-Muslim chronicles known as Tarikh al Sudan and Tarikh al Fattash, as well as epigraphic sources edited in recent years by one of the researchers associated with this Thematic Project, Paulo Moraes Farias.
