Genotypic profile by Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) of bacteria isolated in the surgical site of dogs and surgical environment

Abstract

The veterinary hospital environment is reported as the main risk factor in the acquisition of resistant pathogens by hospitalized dogs, and the growth of reservoirs of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the community results in the increase of these microorganisms in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in hospitals, where the population is most vulnerable to infections. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of similarity between bacterial strains isolated from human and non-human animals and the environment. In this sense, the present project proposes the determination of the genetic profile of strains of Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia spp. isolated in the surgical site of dogs in clean/clean-contaminated and contaminated wounds, from the surgeon's hands and from the environment during the transoperative period. Genetic diversity will be evaluated by performing the Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) technique. The gels obtained after performing the technique will be evaluated through the Bionumerics v. 7.1 program and dendrograms will be constructed. Thus, this project will seek to identify the profile of bacterial species present in the surgical environment and the presence or absence of sharing of bacterial strains isolated from different sources.
