Abstract

Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) peritonitis is a major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and significant percentage of these infections have more severe clinical course and greater technique failure rate than those caused by Gram-positive cocci, particularly coagulase-negative staphylococci. Although intrinsic virulence factors of Pseudomonas spp, bacterial resistance, biofilm formation, among other factors have been reported as responsible for the less favorable clinical course of these infections there are limited amount of available evidence on factors or conditions associated with the clinical course and prognosis of these infections. The objective of this project is to describe episodes of peritonitis BGN occurred in patients treated by PD in single university center in the last 15 years and to evaluate the influence of the microbiological characteristics of the causative agent, patient's clinical condition and treatment onm peritonitis outcome. In strains of GNB , it will be tested the presence of virulence markers by genotypic methods; in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents; determined the production of biofilm and analyzed the clonal profile of most prevalent bacteria using pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). From the patients data and of causative microorganism it will be studied the associations between the microbiological characteristics and the clinical outcome and peritonitis complications, as well as the associations between demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients and antimicrobial treatment and the outcome of these infections.
