Abstract

In this research project, we will investigate the presence of anomalies in the dynamical evolution of general complex systems through recurrence analysis. With the aim of identifying behaviours that differ from the common, or regions of complex networks that possess distinct topological properties, we propose a numerical method based on real data or simulations of nonlinear dynamic systems of interest. The method relies on the appropriate choice of recurrence quantifiers that provide suitable analyses for the dynamics under investigation. In this regard, we propose a machine learning-based methodology to improve the selection of quantifiers considering the provided data, automating subsequent investigations. The theory proposed in this study can be adapted to different problems in complex systems, but our focus application is on climate change studies and the identification of extreme events.
