Abstract

Exposure to 2,4-D occurs primarily through inhalation. Studies indicate respiratory allergic reactions induced by the herbicide, with an increase in immunoglobulin E (IgE) and inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage. In this sense, the inhalation of 2,4-D can cause significant damage to the trachea, affecting respiratory health. Aim: To evaluate the toxic effect of chronic inhalation exposure to the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in the trachea of rats. Material and methods: This study will use stored material from the project approved by CEUA, process number 3761, under the responsibility of Gisele Alborghetti Nai. Forty adult male rats were used, divided into four groups (n=10): ICG - inhaled control group, exposed to nebulization with distilled water; GBCI: low concentration inhaled group, exposed to nebulization with 3.71x10-3 grams of active ingredient per hectare (g.a.i./ha) [corresponding to 20.69 parts per million (ppm)]; GMCI: herbicide misting with 6.19 x 10 -3 g.a.i./ha (corresponding to 34.63 ppm); GACI: high concentration inhaled group, exposed to nebulization with 9.28x10-3 g.a.i./ha (corresponding to 51.66 ppm). Animals from all groups were euthanized 6 months after the beginning of the experiment. The trachea was collected for histopathological analysis. Expected results: It is expected to observe tracheal changes associated with exposure to 2,4-D and greater damage the higher the concentration of this herbicide.
