Abstract

The present project aims to determine how the process of investigation proposed by Cassirer in study two of The Logic of the Cultural Sciences: five studies - the so-called "phenomenology of perception" - helps to understand the foundation of the distinction between the natural and cultural sciences. More specifically, we want to understand how each of the two general orientations of perception identified by Cassirer - i.e, the perception of things and the perception of expression - works as a basic layer for the modes of conceptual synthesis later produced by the natural and cultural sciences as outlined in study three of the Logic. In this way, we aim to clarify the flow of argument that occurs in studies two and three of the Logic and how this helps to understand the grounding of the cultural sciences as a whole.
