Abstract

Scientific activity was brought to the forefront in a way seldom seen in the history of humanity during the Covid-19 pandemic when the dissemination of research results through the media was a daily occurrence. This scenario drew attention to the importance of scientists' communication skills, not only when addressing peers and funding agencies, but also with the general population and public policymakers. In this perspective, science communication genre production in university chemistry courses has been identified as promising for developing such a skill. This project aims to investigate scientific news text genre production in a scientific communication course offered to undergraduate chemistry students, which is based on using a didactic sequence (DS) that addresses characteristics of compositional structure, verbal style and scientific news content. In this perspective, answers will be sought for the following research questions: to what extent did the DS help undergraduate students to produce scientific news? To what extent is the generated scientific news aligned with the inherent characteristics of the genre? The theoretical basis for text analysis lies in studies concerning journalistic genres.
