Abstract

Aby Warburg's legacy is one of the most remarkable contributions to the theoretical-methodological debate in art. His library, preserved at the Warburg Institute, and his studies on the Renaissance and the phenomenon of symbolic expression in its anthropological and psychological sense are widely recognized as one of the most complex, comprehensive, accurate, and audacious projects in art historiography. Despite his importance, for a long time, his name was almost forgotten by the Brazilian academy. In recent years, however, through the translation of his writings and the publication of critical studies, his reception in our country has entered a new phase. Our project intends to contribute to the reception of Warburg's work, debating the theoretical-methodological dimension of his thought with a focus on texts that we understand as strategic developments of one fundamental problem of his work: the construction of an anthropological perspective of the image. We intend to produce critical studies on Warburg's image theory (to be submitted to scientific journals) and translate a collection of texts, preceded by a detailed introduction. Our conviction is that the emphasis on the originals, on the complex and fragmentary sources of Warburg's thought, broadens and deepens our horizon, offering valuable subsidies to an academic community that still lacks the translation of a considerable part of his writings.
