Abstract

Predictive models can help estimate outcomes, assist with patient screening, and provide care aligned with patients' goals. The surprise question (SQ) "Would I be surprised if this patient died in the next 12 months?" can predict adverse outcomes and patients with unmet palliative care needs in the Emergency Department (ED). Considering this, this retrospective cohort study at an academic medical center will include consecutive patients aged 18 years or older who received care at the ED and were subsequently admitted to the hospital between April 20, 2018 and October 20, 2018. From a database collected during this period, it is intended to analyze emergency physicians' responses to SQ for all patients who were admitted to the hospital. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality.
