Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the ability to induce dentin remineralization through silver diamino fluoride (SDF) and fluoride varnish (FV), associated or not with sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP). Root dentin blocks (4 mm ´ 4 mm ´ 2mm, n = 48) will be selected and randomly divided into 4 experimental groups (n = 12): 1) Control (no treatment); 2) fluoride varnish; 3) fluoride varnish + 5% TMP; 4) Silver diamine fluoride (30%). The dentin blocks will be divided into three areas: 1- sound; 2- demineralized (artificial caries induction); 3- treated (demineralized and subjected to pH cycling for 7 days). A thin layer of fluoride varnish will be applied using a microbrush soaked in the varnish. The FV will be kept in contact with the dentin surface for 6 h. The SDF will be applied for 2 min with the tip of the microbrush soaked in the solution. After washing with deionized water, the dentin blocks will be immersed in a demineralizing solution for 8 hours and then in a remineralizing solution for 16 hours a day. The dentin specimens will be analyzed using a computerized microtomography system to determine the mineral concentration (gHAp × cm-3) in the three delimited areas on the dentin surface. Data with normal and homogeneous distribution will be submitted to variance; otherwise, they will be submitted to the corresponding non-parametric test (Kruskal-Wallis). The Student-Newman-Keuls multiple comparison test will be used in the two previous situations and the adopted significance level will be 5%.
