Abstract

This project aims to contribute to the study of the circulation of luxury fabrics from the Mediterranean, more specifically, silks and velvets embroidered with gold thread. Made especially in Italian cities, these textiles circulated and reached the courts of northern Europe. In addition to the appreciation for their materiality, they functioned as a symbol of power and were represented in the images of rulers, as is the case of Richard II in the Wilton Diptych (The National Gallery) and in the Book of Prayers (JPGM, Ms 37, fol 1v) of Charles the Bold. The research will seek to contribute to studies on the circulation of luxury artifacts within the scope of the Thematic Project A Connected History of the Middle Ages. Communication and Circulation from the Mediterranean.
