Abstract

The aims to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of type I and III collagens in the healing process of equine wounds treated with 10% copaiba oil. Eight horses, SRD, four females and four males, healthy adults, will be used. Eight surgical wounds will be performed on each horse: four in the lumbar region, two on the right and two on the left, one cranial and one caudal, 10 cm apart, and four wounds in the proximal region of the metacarpal, two on each limb, being one proximal and one distal, 8 cm apart. All wounds will be treated daily with 0.9% sterile saline solution and, continuously, the caudal wounds of the lumbar region and the distal wounds of the metacarpal will receive copaiba oil, in sufficient quantity to cover the entire wound bed. Biopsies will be performed approaching the edge of the wound and adjacent healthy tissue with the aid of a 6mm diameter "punch" on days 7 and 21 after the surgical procedure. The collected samples will be routinely processed for inclusion in paraffin and six micrometer cross sections. An immunohistochemical reaction will be performed to evaluate Type I and III collagens. Statistical analysis will be performed using GraphPad InStat version 3.05 (GraphPad Software, Inc.). The 5a test will be used for independent samples to compare the control and treated groups at each time point (D7 and D21). To compare the different times in both groups, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be performed. All analyzes will be carried out with a significance level of 5%.
