Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is characterized by a reduction or complete cessation of breathing, associated with increased respiratory effort in response to upper airway obstruction during sleep. In childhood, this condition has a significant and progressive impact on health and quality of life, making early diagnosis crucial. There are various causes of OSA in childhood, with adenoid hypertrophy and obesity being the most common. The gold standard for diagnosing OSA is nocturnal polysomnography, but this test cannot identify specific sites of upper airway obstruction and their causative factors. In this context, Sleep Endoscopy stands out as the examination capable of assessing upper airway dynamics during sleep and accurately identifying the causes of OSA. Although well validated in adults, there is still limited data on this examination in children in Brazil. This study aims to correlate Sleep Endoscopy data with clinical and physical examination findings and polysomnography results in obese children with OSA.
