Abstract

The articulation between the State and different economic sectors in the production of urban space manifested itself in different ways over time. In particular, the notion of "complex" proves to be a valuable theoretical framework for explaining the conditions of urban and regional transformation in São Paulo in the agro-export and industrial contexts, in the 19th and 20th centuries, respectively. Nowadays, the "real estate-financial complex" appears as a relevant expression, both for the role it plays in urban production and for the promotion of logics, metrics and financial values on space. However, the current form of the complex, conceived from the perspective of the central countries, cannot be simply mobilized without considering the peculiarities of Brazilian social formation. Thus, the objective is to systematize the notion of complex in urban and regional studies which, as a historical-social form, allows for the interpretation of city production in different periods, articulated to different complexes. The hypothesis sustains that the shape of the complex, as an analytical unit, illuminates the movements of permanence and rupture (of practices, strategies and agents) in the metropolitan restructuring by the current real estate-financial association in São Paulo. The research aims to critically and analytically base the articulation between the State and different economic sectors in the accumulation of capital through the production of urban space.
