Abstract

Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, body dysmorphic disorder, and muscle dysmorphia are serious psychological conditions that share a common component of body image disturbance. Several instruments have been developed to assess these conditions individually; however, they often exhibit controversial internal structures or limited theoretical coverage. An advancement in the field would involve creating a battery of instruments that assess each condition individually while also generating an overall score for body image disturbance. This would aid in evaluating comorbidities among disorders, as well as in subclinical cases where individuals don't meet diagnostic criteria but still experience significant impairments in their lives. Another advancement would be the control of acquiescence, a response bias where individuals endorse items regardless of their content. Therefore, the present project will be divided into two studies. The first study aims to (a) initially construct items for the four instruments that will constitute an assessment battery for body image disorders, and (b) make the initial item selection based on evidence of content validity. The second study's objectives include (a) the final item selection for the battery using bifactor modeling with acquiescence control; (b) testing the internal structure of the instruments; (c) testing instrument invariance between men and women; (d) testing a hierarchical model considering body image disturbance as a general factor across all instruments; (e) testing the relationship of each instrument with a valid external measure assessing the measured construct.
