Abstract

The Earth's magnetic field (EMF) of internal origin shows variations in different timescales, from years to billions of years. Integrated analysis of paleodirection and paleointensity data for the last 10 Ma reveals non-dipole field features that appear similar to those observed in models and field data for timescales from centuries to millennia. However, the EMF structure is largely limited by the quality and spatial and temporal distributions of the paleomagnetic data. The scarcity of these data is quite marked at low- and high-latitudes in both hemispheres, but especially in the southern hemisphere. The main objective of this project is to study the variation of the CMT for the time interval of 0-10 Ma, from a careful selection of paleomagnetic data available in the literature, combined with a new set of paleodirection data that will be obtained in volcanic rocks of the Andes in Argentina. Based on these data, we intend to: (i) evaluate the behavior of paleosecular variation, through the angular dispersion of a distribution of virtual geomagnetic poles as a function of latitude and frequency of geomagnetic reversals; (ii) estimate the contribution of non-dipole components to the EMF through statistical analyzes of the slope anomaly as a function of latitude; and (iii) improve the field models with new data that will allow investigating certain features of the EMF. This new set of information will allow the comparison between the EMF features and those predicted by the geomagnetic field models for the 0-10 Ma interval.
