Abstract Introduction: Assessing functional capacity in a simple, quick and low-cost way in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is important for early identification of functional impairments and the implications of the health condition in the lives of these patients. The Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) is a simple questionnaire, consisting of 12 items that assess functional capacity. This questionnaire has wide utility and clinical-scientific applicability, but its association with other functional clinical parameters can strengthen the prediction of functional capacity and thus expand the possibilities of use in the clinical environment. Furthermore, knowing its prognostic value can contribute to strengthening scientific evidence in this context.Aim: To develop a multivariable model, based on clinical data and the DASI questionnaire score, to estimate the functional capacity of individuals with COPD and verify whether the total DASI score can be a marker of functional impairment over a 24-month follow-up. Study Design: Observational and longitudinal study. Volunteer recruitment will be carried out at the pulmonology outpatient clinics of the University Hospital of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) and at the medical specialty center (CEME) in the city of São Carlos. Methods: All patients will undergo 3 visits to the laboratory, consisting of the following evaluations: I) Clinical evaluation by a doctor and physiotherapist, followed by pulmonary function testing and Doppler echocardiography. II) Six-minute walk test and DASI questionnaire. III) Cardiopulmonary exercise test.Hypothesis: We believe that the DASI can be a valid tool for estimating the functional capacity of patients with COPD and that it could be a prognostic marker for evaluating functional capacity in a 24-month follow-up. | |
