Abstract

This project aims at investigating the linguistic and discursive characteristics of therhetorical action of negotiation of language separation (RAMPAZZO, 2021) within theTeletandem Oral Sessions (TOS). This action is characterized by the language switch negotiationbetween the participants during the TOS, or in its beginning, and it attends one of the teletandemlearning principles (VASSALO; TELLES, 2006), which postulates that languages must not bemixed. This principle establishes that the sessions must be divided in equal chronological partsand each part must be devoted to only one language. According to Telles and Vassallo (2006),this principle is important because it both encourages and challenges learners to speak the targetlanguage, even with hesitation or mistakes. Rampazzo (2021) points out that this actionconstitutes the rhetorical negotiation move within the TOS, which includes the checking toolsstep and the language negotiation step. We will analyze 10 initial Teletandem Oral Sessions(iTOS), investigated by Rampazzo (2021), whose data are at the MulTeC (MultimodalTeletandem Corpus) (ARANHA and LOPES, 2019) and we will expand our data through theanalyses of 10 other iTOS available in the same corpus. Among these 10 iTOS, we will choosetwo of them to analyze the TOS that follow the first interaction (iTOS). Our objective is to raiselinguistic and discursive characteristics of this rhetorical action and also determine possiblecontextual factors responsible for it.
