Abstract

Aeroelastic oscillations control is of great interest due to their high amplitudes self-excited and self-sustained behavior. In this context, passive control methods are interesting due to their simplicity and lack of dependence on external energy sources, such as nonlinear vibration absorbers known as Nonlinear Energy Sinks (NES), in which a secondary mass is attached to the structure through a nonlinear coupling, enabling the transfer and dissipation of structural energy fast and irreversibly. Among NES configurations proposed in the literature, the rotating NES is based on a pendulum with a fixed radius that is free to rotate, and thus absorb energy. This project proposes a new NES configuration, namely multiple degrees of freedom rotary NES, based on a superposition of conventional rotary RNES with different radii. It is expected that due to the different inertial properties, the proposed device can better absorb vibrations over a wider range of structural excitation levels with a reduced mass compared to the traditional one. The project consists on an initial numerical characterization of the device in a linear structure and its subsequent experimental validation. Finally, the device will be applied to passive control of flutter aeroelastic phenomenon, interesting for the device attachment due to its dynamic behavior of high amplitudes depending on the airspeed.
