Abstract

Cutting fluids are crucial in abrasion machining, as they cool and lubricate the cutting interface. Due to the high heat intensity generated, there is a significant risk of thermal damage to the workpiece. Additionally, these fluids aid in achieving better surface finishes and reducing geometric inaccuracies. However, their use poses risks to the environment and human health. The conventional method involves an abundant fluid application, but an eco-friendly alternative in the minimal quantity of lubrication (MQL) technique, applying a reduced amount of oil sprayed onto the cutting surface using compressed air, yielding comparable results to the conventional methods. Yet, this technique has reduced cooling capacity and wheel loading issues. Several studies have indicated that auxiliary systems, like the use of Diluted MQL - replacing purê oil with a water and oil emulsion - and the Wheel Cleaning Jet (WCJ) system, effectively remove particles and minimize wheel clogging. The combined application of these techniques is highly relevant in machining advanced ceramics, especially alumina (Al2O3). To compare different conditions, various parameters will be evaluated: average arithmetic roughness (Ra), circularity deviations, wheel diametrical wear, G ratio, cutting tangential force, machining power, as well as a cost and pollution analysis.
