Abstract

Background: Plastic production reached 390.7 million tons in 2021, of which only 8.3% is made from recycled material. Microplastics and nanoplastics are particles derived from the degradation of plastic with sizes, respectively, between 0.1 and 5000 µm and smaller than 0.1 µm. These particles have already been identified in drinking water, alcoholic beverages and foods such as fish, honey and salt, as well as in human lung tissue, since one of the routes of exposure is inhalation. As a result, the consequences of the presence of microplastics and nanoplastics in the lung have been increasingly studied, especially in rodents, but the deleterious pulmonary effects of these polymers are still not well understood. Objective: To investigate the deleterious effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the lungs of rodents. Method: This is a systematic review that will be registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database. Searches will be carried out in the Medline and Embase electronic databases, using terms related to animal studies, microplastics, nanoplastics, rodents and lungs. Two independent reviewers will be responsible for selecting studies, extracting data and assessing the risk of bias, as well as a third reviewer to resolve disagreements. Meta-analyses will be carried out separately according to the endpoints presented by the animals. The combined estimates will be calculated using random effect models. All analyses will be carried out using Review Manager software version 5.4.
