Abstract

The contribution of literati to the elaboration of visual programs associated with architecture and public ceremonies can be identified by the works of art themselves and by the descriptive and laudatory literature of the festive celebrations. It is also possible to demonstrate that there is a perfect articulation between the preceptive essays on poetics and the treatises on architecture, painting and sculpture through the idea and the erudite concept as a creative matrix. This common theoretical foundation supported the composition of images as a narrative and metaphorical discourse. At the same time, the prestige of the literati's iconographic activity was being consolidated both through the university and the academies, which were able to create and disseminate models of visual poetics to be implemented in programs with wide public projection. In this way, the combined analysis of a set of works of art, descriptive literature and poetic and artistic treatises applied to the configuration of the discourse of images intends to contribute to a better understanding of the production of visual arts in the 17th and 18th centuries, in Portugal and Brazil.
