Abstract The research focuses on the study of soldiers who left the city of Assis, SP, in 1944 to join the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) and returned in 1945. The primary source is the Jornal de Assis, which was the only newspaper in circulation in the city, published weekly. The aim is to track how, throughout the years of 1944 and 1945, the publication reported on events related to the war and to determine the degree of attention the individuals who went to fight in Europe received from the publication. Preliminary investigation has indicated that the return of the soldiers was surrounded by celebratory events, the most significant of which was the movement around the construction of a commemorative monument, which occupies a prominent place in a square located in the city center. In addition to the weekly newspaper, there are memorial works referring to the events. Given that some of the descendants reside in Assis, it is expected that contacting these families may provide documents such as photographs and any preserved letters. | |
