Abstract

The elevated consumption of polymeric materials by society resulted in the exponential production growth of these materials in the last century. As a result, in 2022 it achieved 400.3 million tons, and most of them were derived from finite sources, and less than 10% were recycled. Thus, it is clear the demand for greener polymers, as well as initiators and catalysts involved in the processes. Biomass, which are organic molecules found abundantly in nature and that can be easily extracted at low cost, has great potential in the polymer field. They have been used as monomers, initiators, as well as catalysts. The rosin, mainly composed by abietic acid and known as rosin acids, is a biomass sustainable extracted in Brazil, and most of them are exported or destined for undervalued applications. Thus, in the present project, is proposed the chemical modifications of abietic acid and then in the rosin, without any previous purification. Then, the molecules will be characterized and applied in two fields: the first one is their use as photoinitiators in polymerizations involving conventional monomers (derived from finite sources) and from renewable sources. All monomers are already used in additive manufacturing (3D printing). The second application consists of using these molecules, as well as their metallic complexes, as catalysts in carbonatation reactions. These applications aim to solve the challenges found in biopolymer production, especially those obtained by photopolymerization, and those derived from monomers with cyclic carbonates (that result from CO2 incorporation and therefore its fixation).
