Abstract

Integrated into the doctoral research, On Miseries and Mercies in Portugal in the 14th and 15th Centuries (process no. 2023/00734-6), the proposed project will be dedicated to mapping reports about the miseries and calamities experienced in the kingdom of Portugal in the 14th and 15th centuries and, from this, question when acts of assistance and mercy were recommended as a way of alleviating the penury of subjects. The internship that will be carried out at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra (FLUC) will make use mainly of pastoral and doctrinal works, legal works - councils, courts, charters and ordinations -, chronicles and commitments of Portuguese confraternities from the 14th and 15th centuries, access to which requires a visit to Portuguese archives and libraries. The aim is to understand, therefore, how miseries were commonly classified in these documents and to which circumstances they were linked. For the purpose of the internship, records that narrate assistance or help in times of poverty and famine are especially interesting. Thus, the objective of this internship abroad is to raise sources and studies on the calamities experienced in the kingdom of Portugal in the 14th and 15th centuries, which were worthy of mercy or assistance on the part of kings, prelates and nobles before the institutionalization of Portuguese assistance by D. Manuel I, at the end of the 15th century.
