Abstract

Introduction: Among the factors that can influence the lifestyle of children and adolescents, the role of parents in their children's habits and characteristics must be observed carefully. Some findings demonstrate that physically active parents seem to influence their children's physical activity. Parents' usual level of physical activity (PA) can influence several health variables such as cardiovascular risk factors (obesity, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia) between parents and children. Among these variables, one that has been little investigated in the literature is bone mineral density. Objective: To analyze the relationship between bone mineral density between parents and children and the role of physical activity in its different domains (Occupational PA, leisure and active commuting) and intensities (light, moderate and vigorous) in this relationship. Methods: The dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry technique (DEXA, Lunar DPX-NT; General Electric Healthcare, Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom) will be used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) in grams per square centimeters ( g/cm2) of arms, legs, trunk, pelvis, spine and entire body. The objective measurement of physical activity will be carried out using the Actigraph GT3X accelerometer (ActiGraph, LLC, Pensacola, FL, USA) while the different domains will be investigated using the Baecke questionnaire. The association between physical activity and bone mineral density of parents and children will be analyzed using Linear Regression adjusted for the age of adolescents and their parents, socioeconomic status and parental education. The statistical significance to be used will be 5% and the confidence interval will be 95%. The statistical package used will be SPSS version 25.0.
