Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, more than 18.6 million human beings globally have died as a result of cardiovascular diseases in the year 2022. Cardiac arrhythmias are the major cause of death in patients with CVD. Recent evidence indicates that SCN10A/NaV1.8 is associated with some types of cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore, the proposed study will investigate the role of NaV1.8 channels in the arrhythmias observed: 1) in the animal model of pulmonary hypertension (PH) induced by monocrotaline; 2) in the in vitro model of the heart disease of Fabry disease through genetic manipulation, using cardiomyocytes derived from pluripotent stem cells. In the end, our project will provide evidence for the proposal of a new therapeutic target for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias observed in patients with Fabry disease and pulmonary hypertension.
