Abstract

Introduction:ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the preferred method of reperfusion, and although progress has been made in promoting its use in specialized systems of care, there are still challenges regarding STEMI complications, especially cardiogenic shock (CS) and cardiac arrest (CA). Furthermore, the impact of patient sex on the incidence and outcomes of STEMI-related complications is still uncertain. Objective: To evaluate, among patients with STEMI, the impact of the patient's sex on the incidence and outcomes of cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest combined, and absence of both cardiogenic shock and cardiorespiratory arrest, common and prevalent complications of STEMI.Methods:This is a retrospective cohort analysis of patients with STEMI treated in a Brazilian tertiary hospital. The incidence and outcomes of cardiogenic shock, cardiorespiratory arrest, cardiogenic shock and cardiorespiratory arrest combined, and the absence of such complications of STEMI will be evaluated. All patients treated between 2004 and 2017 were included. Follow-up data was collected through medical records and telephone communication. The study population was categorized into two groups, based on the presence of at least one complication or absence of complications, and further stratified by sex. The primary outcome will be to analyze the impact of the patient's sex on the incidence and outcomes of such common STEMI complications.Descriptors:Acute Myocardial Infarction with ST Segment Elevation (STEMI); cardiogenic shock; cardiorespiratory arrest; patient's sex.
