Abstract Current adhesive strategies aim to promote improvements in adhesive procedures by simplifying the technique and consequently enhancing restorative longevity. Cross-linking agents favor the mechanical properties of collagen and inhibit the action of endogenous proteases, thus preserving its stability. Treating the dentin matrix with flavonoids prior to adhesive procedures has shown to be a suitable strategy for enhancing the longevity of adhesive interfaces. The incorporation of flavonoids into an adhesive system could reduce technical sensitivity and clinical steps, as well as provide local antibacterial effects, potentially counteracting the deleterious effects of marginal infiltration by microorganisms. However, it should be considered that any additional therapeutic effect should not sacrifice the bonding capacity of adhesives. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of incorporating grape seed extract rich in proanthocyanidins (GSE) or quercetin (QU) on the physicochemical and mechanical properties of adhesive systems (self-etch and universal). Screening of different concentrations of GSE and QU flavonoids incorporated into adhesive systems (self-etch and universal) will be performed. Degree of conversion and maximum polymerization rate will be obtained using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FTIR). Water sorption and solubility of polymerized adhesives will be measured. Additionally, color analysis and maximum tensile strength will be conducted. The number of repetitions for each protocol was based on previous studies and will be confirmed according to obtained data, which may be adjusted for each protocol. Data will be subjected to specific statistical analyses after checking for sample distribution (Shapiro-Wilk) and variance homogeneity (Levene). Statistical inferences will be made considering a significance level of 5%. | |
