Abstract

This undergraduate research project aims to first familiarize the student with concepts related to ultrashort pulses and characterizationmethods based on optical autocorrelation measurements. Then, the student will implement a ultrashort pulsecharacterization technique known as FROG (Frequency resolved optical gating). This technique is based on the spectral analysis of an temporal autocorrelationsignal between two-replica of a ultrashort pulse generated by a nonlinear optical process. Distinct nonlinear optical process can be useddepending on the spectral region of interest. In this project, the student will implement the FROG technique based on the second harmonic generation process. Finally, the student will characterize femtosecond pulses after propagation through optical elements tipically present on ultrafast optical experiments, such as lenses, polarizers, etc. This characterization will be essential for the ultrafast vacuum ultravioled generation in gases and ultrabroadband THz generation in nonlinear crystals.
