Abstract Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), represented by Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are gastrointestinal disorders characterized by a chronic and relapsing inflammatory process. Patients with IBD often present extraintestinal manifestations throughout the course of the disease, with hepatobiliary abnormalities being among the most commonly observed. These hepatic manifestations may share pathogenic mechanisms, reflect the degree of the pathophysiological changes, or even be associated with the medical treatment of the intestinal disease. Therefore, considering the significance of these manifestations both in the management of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and in the quality of life of patients, the study of liver abnormalities, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, steatohepatitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis, becomes relevant for the development of practical knowledge regarding inflammatory bowel diseases. | |
