Abstract The aim of this project is to understand Friedrich Schlegel's literary critique in the light of the epistemology of Fichte and Kant. It was they, after all, who bequeathed him some of the presuppositions on which he based his work. Our undertaking will cover three stages: 1) a survey of the dominant art criticism until the end of the 18th century and a provisional characterisation of romantic criticism; 2) an exposition of the presuppositions bequeathed by the philosophies of Kant and, above all, Fichte. The most important of these, as we shall see, is the concept of reflection; 3) an exposition of the concept of reflective judgement and the anti-foundationalism that Schlegel associates with it. In the end, the aim is to see how these presuppositions founded Romantic art criticism. | |
