Abstract

Human activities increasingly depend on computer programs that run on cloud computing platforms. The data centers on such platforms have considerably increased their processing capacities to cope with the growing demand. This increase has led us to a scenario in which 2% of all global energy demand in 2022 and approximately 2% of greenhouse gas emissions are due to these data centers. Several recent studies have proposed energy-aware computing resource management algorithms to reduce these impacts. However, developing, comparing, and turning them into tools that can be used in production is still very difficult due to the lack of realistic validation tools. In this work, we will investigate how to use simulators to mitigate these problems and facilitate the creation of new algorithms to reduce CO2 emissions from data centers significantly.
