Evaluation of experimental dentifrices based on essential oils for complete dentures cleaning - Randomized, controlled and crossover clinical trial.

Abstract

This randomized, controlled and crossed clinical trial aim to evaluate experimental dentifrices based on essential oils of Melaleuca alternifolia, Pinus strobus, Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth and Eucalyptus citriodora for complete dentures cleaning. Individuals using upper complete dentures will be randomly allocated into 5 groups: Positive control and four experimental dentifrices. Participants will be instructed to brush their dentures three times a day. The trial period will be 14 days and a washout interval of 7 days will be established. Response variables will be biofilm removal capacity, activity against Candida spp., Streptococcus mutans group, Staphylococcus spp. and total aerobes, by analyzing the microbial load by counting colony forming units, cell viability by flow cytometry, cell metabolism by XTT assay [2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro- 5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide] and participants' acceptance of dentifrices. The data obtained will be submitted to the Shapiro-Wilks and Levene tests to test the distribution regarding the normal curve and homoscedasticity to define the appropriate statistical tests. It is expected that the results demonstrate effectiveness in biofilm removal, antimicrobial action and acceptability of experimental products by participants.
