Abstract

The species of the genus Candida include dimorphic fungi that live as commensals in the gastrointestinal tract of mammals. However, depending on the immunological condition of the patient, these fungi can act as opportunistic pathogens. In Brazil, the incidence of Candida infections is considered high and the species C. albicans is the more frequent. In the oral cavity, the candidosis associated with the use of removable dental prostheses, mainly complete, is called as denture stomatitis that affects 11-67% of complete denture wearers. The overuse of antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs has resulted in the increased incidence of candidiasis in the population due to the imbalance on the microbiota. Candida biofilms are highly resistant to antifungal agents and have a high ability of adhesion and invasion on the dental prostheses resin. The essential oil of Equisetum arvense demonstrates strong antimicrobial activity that may to contribute for reduction of infections caused by pathogens. Of the same family and found in the Brazilian Cerrado, especially in the region of Bauru, E. giganteum can be an alternative for this project. Thus, the objective of this work is to study the action of E. giganteum on the C. albicans biofilm. For this purpose, will be evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial and antiadherence activities of the extract E. giganteum through the fungal viability study on initial biofilm induced for C. albicans on the thermopolymerized acrylic resin. The expression of results and statistical tests will be applied according to the presence or absence of normality in our evaluations (p <0.05). (AU)
