Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. The chronic use of antiseizure medications (ASM) can present adverse/side effects and changes in endocrinology and bone metabolism function. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the regular use of antiseizure medications and the occurrence of changes in bone metabolism function, the presence of osteoporosis and the occurrence of fractures in adult patients with epilepsy.Methodology: 45 patients with epilepsy aged e 18 years, of both genders, treated at the clinical neurology outpatient clinic of Hospital PUC-Campinas, will be included. The inclusion criteria will be the diagnosis of epilepsy and the continuous use of ASM for a period e two years. Procedures: clinical history, clinical-neurological examination, Liverpool adverse events profile (LAEP), Morisky Medication Adherence Scale 8 (MMAS-8) and assessment of bone metabolism (dosage of: thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroxine, total cholesterol, low- density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, creatinine, ionic calcium, serum phosphorus, sodium, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and folic acid). Clinical data, ASM in use (type, dose and time of use), LAERP and MMAS-8 scores will be related to data from bone metabolism laboratory tests and bone densitometry data. Statistical tests appropriate to the situations will be used, with a significance level of p< 0.05.Expected results: As pharmacological treatment in epilepsy includes the chronic use of ASM, it becomes important to monitor and evaluate the presence of adverse/side effects of medications. To evaluate changes in bone metabolism and the occurrence of fractures in adults with epilepsy chronically using ASM. Contribute relevant scientific data in the area.
